AMHERST, Mass. - Chris Capraro (Medford, Mass.) was named Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week, announced today by the Hockey East Conference office. He shares the honor with Merrimack's Blake Stewart. Capraro is the fifth different Minuteman to win a weekly award this year.
The freshman forward scored UMass' biggest goal of the season, an overtime game-winner against BU on Dec. 6. Capraro stole the puck from a BU defenseman at mid-ice and slid a close shot under the pads of the BU goalie at the 4:19 mark of overtime to the give the Minutemen a 5-4 victory over the 13th-ranked Terriers. The following night, Capraro made a play similar to Friday's game-winner as he stole the puck around the Terrier blue-line and fed a streaking Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) for UMass' only goal of the evening. For the season, Capraro is sixth on the team in scoring with nine points (2 g, 7 a). His seven assists rank him fifth on the team in that category.
Capraro joins Gabe Winer (Stoughton, Mass.) as winners of the Hockey East Rookie of the Week award. Winer won the award on Nov. 4.
The Minutemen will travel to Princeton on Dec. 12 for their final game before the holiday break. Face-off is at 7:00 p.m. UMass is 9-6-0 overall and off to the best start in school history.
