BRONX, N.Y. - The UMass men's soccer team continued its early march through the Atlantic 10 Conference with Sunday's impressive 3-0 win over Fordham. The win moves UMass' record to 8-4-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Senior forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored his first goal of the game and 11th of the season at the 5:13 mark of the first period. Deren headed in a perfect cross from Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.) that beat the Fordham goalkeeper to the right top corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Minutemen made it 2-0 just eight minutes later when the Colwell to Deren connection worked again. Deren scored his 12th goal of the season with a short shot past a diving Ram goalkeeper.
UMass wouldn't let up as Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) notched the third goal of the game at the 16:15 mark. Myers scored off a free kick from senior Derek Rhodes (DePere, Wis.).
That was all the Minutemen needed as the defense tightened and held Fordham to nine shots for the entire game. UMass outshot the Rams, 19-9. Enzo Altomare (Derby, Conn.) and Colin Burns (Newark, Del.) shared time in the nets, earning a shared shutout. The shutout was the fourth in the last five games for the Minutemen.
UMass returns home next Friday for a 3:30 p.m. game against Duquesne at Rudd Field. The Minutemen are off to their best A-10 start since beginning 4-0-0 in 1994, en route to the school's first regular-season crown.
