July 10, 2001 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon announced the signing of four additional players to complete his first full recruiting class as the head coach at UMass. Cahoon previously announced six players in the early signing period, all of whom are Massachusetts natives.
Add to the total sophomore defenseman Nick Kuiper (Beaconsfield, Quebec), who joined the Minutemen in January of last season, and Cahoon has already brought 11 players into the program that were not on the roster when the 2000-2001 season began last October.
The four new recruits are defenseman Dusty Demianiuk (Franklin, Mass.), forward Justin Rafferty (Clifton Park, N.Y.), defenseman Sean Regan (South Boston, Mass.) and forward Timothy Vitek (Dresden, Ontario).
Following is a brief capsule on each of the recruits with a quote from Cahoon:
Dusty Demianiuk * D * 6-2 * 185 * Franklin, Mass. / Mt. St. Charles (R.I. High School)
"He is the most physical of the all the players we recruited. He has a big frame and comes from a traditional hockey power at Mt. St. Charles. He is another leader with a good upside."
Justin Rafferty * F * 5-10 *?180 * Clifton Park, N.Y. / Capital District (EJHL)
"He has excellent quickness and good hand skills. He is a crafty player who should prove to be a nice addition on special teams and on the offensive side of things."
Sean Regan * D * 5-11 * 185 * South Boston, Mass. / Pomfret School (New England Prep)
"A hard-nosed competitive kid who is raw, but shows good signs of understanding the game. Another good addition to or quest of trying to build great character in our program."
Timothy Vitek * F * 5-10 * 175 * Dresden, Ontario / Chatham Maroons (Ontario Western B)
"He is an all-around good hockey player, who skates well and handles the puck. He makes good decisions on the ice. His age and his size will only be a factor in the immediate future. His skill and his work ethic will enable him to adjust quickly to college hockey. He is going to be a good addition to this program."
