AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team was named the recipient of the Jim "Ace" Adams Sportsmanship Award for District I given annually by the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association. The award was presented at the 2001 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association/STX All-American Banquet on June 8, in Albany, N.Y.
The award is given to an institution in each district that exhibits exemplary behavior by coaches, players and fans, and demonstrates a strong spirit of cooperation with officiating crews.
"It says a lot about the program to win a sportsmanship award from the official's association," said head coach Greg Cannella. "We strive to run a program that represents the University of Massachusetts in a positive light through our actions both on and off the field. We have a great group of the kids, and the seniors really did an excellent job of leading by example."
The Minutemen, co-champions of the ECAC, finished the season with a 12-2 overall record and captured their 17th New England championship and first since 1997. The 12 victories is tied for the third most ever by a UMass team. The Minutemen ended the season in the top 10 in all seven of the statistical categories the NCAA keeps, including being first in man-down defense and second in scoring offense. UMass also finished the regular season ranked No. 9 in the STX/USILA Coaches' Poll.
