AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse senior Juan-Pablo Mas (Amherst, Mass.) was named to the ECAC All-Academic team and the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar Athlete team. Mas is an electrical engineering major with a minor in mathematics.
Mas played in eight games this season for the ECAC co-champion Minutemen. He scooped up five ground balls and was one of the first players off the bench for a talented UMass defensive unit that finished the season ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 7.71 goals against per game.
Previously this semester, Mas was honored by the university with a senior leadership award. The award is given out by the UMass Alumni Association to recognize graduating seniors, who have not only demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the university community, but to those who have contributed in areas such as athletics, academic excellence, student organizations, campus jobs and community and volunteer work.
Mas is a 1997 graduate of Amherst Regional High School where he played lacrosse for Larry Briggs. He was named All-Western Mass first team and an Academic All-American as a senior. He also played soccer at Amherst.
The Minutemen finished the season with a 12-2 overall record and captured their 17th New England championship and first since 1997. The 12 victories is tied for the third most ever by a UMass team. The Minutemen ended the season in the top 10 in all seven of the statistical categories the NCAA keeps, including being first in man-down defense and second in scoring offense. UMass also finished the regular season ranked No. 9 in the STX/USILA Coaches' Poll.
