PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Leading 7-6 in the second half of Friday's Atlantic 10 opener, the Massachusetts women's lacrosse team scored seven of the final nine goals to ensure a 14-8 over St. Joseph's University. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Minutewomen and helped them to improve to 2-6 on the season.
Despite allowing the first goal of the contest, UMass scored the next five goals to take a 5-1 advantage. However, St. Joe's responded with three straight goals to trim the deficit to only one. The Minutewomen and Hawks concluded the half with each team netting an additional goal, pushing the score to 6-5.
The two teams again traded goals in the opening three minutes of the second half to make it 7-6, but UMass took over from there with an offensive flurry that stymied St. Joe's chances of another comeback.
Senior co-captain Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) scored once and added three assists to pace the Minutewomen. Fellow classmate Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.) and sophomore Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) each posted a hat trick for UMass. The hat trick was the third of the year for Ingraffea and the second of the campaign for Emery.
Freshmen Nicole Chominski (Southampton, Pa.) and Angela McMahon (Weston, Mass.) also scored two goals apiece for UMass.
Senior co-captain Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, while Lauren Bradley made 10 saves for the Hawks. UMass returns to action on Sunday, April 8 when it visits Temple University at noon.
