CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kellie Thompson scored five goals as the University of North Carolina (10-6) women's lacrosse team defeated the University of Massachusetts, 20-5, at Henry Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Minutewomen (6-9).

Thompson opened the scoring 35 seconds into the game, but sophomore Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) tied the game less than three minutes later. Amy Havrilla scored the next two goals to put the Tar Heels up 3-1, before senior co-captain Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) scored the first of her two in the half, to cut the lead to 3-2, less than a minute later. UNC closed out the first by scoring eight of nine goals to carry an 11-3 lead into intermission.

In the second half, UNC jumped out to a 13-3 lead before Emery scored her second of the game 7:25 into the half. The Tar Heels then tallied seven of the final eight goals, with freshman Angela McMahon (Weston, Mass.) scoring the Minutewomen's final goal of the contest with 7:33 remaining.

Senior co-captain Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) allowed 15 goals and stopped 12 in the first 42 minutes of play while sophomore Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) gave up five goals and made two saves for UMass in the final 18 minutes of the game. UNC goalies Melissa Coyne and Margaret Garafolo combined to turn away six Minutewomen shots on the afternoon.

UMass returns to action on Friday, May 4, at the Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship in Philadelphia, Pa.
