AMHERST, Mass. - The Massachusetts women's lacrosse team scored the first 10 goals of the game and warded off a second-half comeback by St. Bonaventure in a 10-4 win over the Bonnies on Saturday afternoon at Ruth J. Totman Field. The Minutewomen improved to 3-8 overall with the victory, while SBU fell to 4-7.
Senior co-captain Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) opened the scoring just under four minutes into the game off a feed from fellow classmate Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.). UMass then won the ensuing draw and capitalized a mere 15 seconds later on a marker from Denise Brey (Tabernacle, N.J.). The goal was Brey's first of the season.
Sophomore Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) netted her first of two scores with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half to increase the UMass lead to 3-0. Before the stanza was complete, Ingraffea tacked on two goals, along with a single marker from senior Kara DePaula (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.).
UMass emerged from the intermission with four straight goals to pad its advantage to 10-0. Freshman Angela McMahon (Weston, Mass.), Ingraffea and sophomore Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.) each scored in the first four minutes of the half, while Kurtz capped off the scoring with a goal at the 21:40 mark.
St. Bonaventure rallied with the final four goals of the game, but it still came up short. Lauren Spaulding squeezed two goals around single tallies from Katie Murphy and Emily Lilyea, who also added two assists for the Bonnies.
Senior co-captain Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) turned away eight SBU shots in the victory. Katy Jensen stopped 21 UMass shots in the losing effort.
UMass returns to action on Thursday, April 19, at 4:00 p.m. when it hosts the University at Albany at Totman Field.
