AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior attackman Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.) matched a career-high with six goals to lead the fourth-ranked University of Massachusetts to a 14-7 victory over Yale in men's lacrosse action at Richard F. Garber Field.
The Minutemen scored first when senior Alex Racioppi (Winchester, Mass.) found the back of the net less than five minutes into the game. Kunkel extended the UMass lead to 2-0 at the 7:19 mark of the first quarter. Yale cut the lead in half when Blake Beachler scored at 5:18.
UMass took control of the game in the second quarter. Sophomore Kevin Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) scored the first Minutemen goal less than a minute into the quarter. Junior Dan Paccione (Amityville, N.Y.) gave the Minutemen a 4-1 lead at the 13:52 mark. After a lengthy scoreless stretch, UMass netted three goals in just 35 seconds. Senior John Madigan (Latham, N.Y.) scored first at 3:36, and Kunkel netted the next two at 3:29 and 3:01 to give UMass a 7-1 lead at the end of the first half.
UMass extended its lead in the third quarter with goals from senior Kevin Dell (Huntington Station, N.Y.), Paccione, Kunkel and Racioppi. Junior Don Little (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored a goal in the fourth quarter, and Kunkel netted his fifth and sixth goals to close out the scoring for UMass. Senior Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) finished the game with three assists and senior Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.) added two helpers.
Senior Jeff Seals (Long Valley, N.J.) and sophomore Kevin Merchant (Broomall, Pa.) combined to win 16 of 24 face-offs on the afternoon. UMass outshot Yale 59 to 35 in the game. Senior goaltender Chris Campolettano (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) made 15 saves in the cage for UMass, while Adam Oppenheimer and Eric Wenzel combined to make 19 saves for Yale. Brian Hunt had three goals for Yale, and Mike Morris and Edward Britt each added a goal and an assist. The victory improves UMass to 9-0 on the season, while the loss drops Yale to 4-6. The Minutemen are enjoying their best start since opening the 1981 season with 10 consecutive victories.
The Minutemen return to action on Wednesday, April 18, when they travel to New England rival Harvard for a 3:00 p.m. game at Jordan Field.
