AMHERST, Mass. -- A five-goal outing from freshman attacker Angela McMahon (Weston, Mass.) propelled the University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse team to an 18-2 win over the University of Vermont on Wednesday afternoon at Richard F. Garber Field. The victory was the first of the season for the Minutewomen, who improved to 1-4. The Catamounts fell to 1-3 with the loss.
UMass jumped out to an 11-2 advantage at halftime and never looked back. Sophomore Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.) put the Minutewomen on the board only 19 seconds into the contest with her second goal of the season. McMahon followed with back-to-back goals to hand UMass a 3-0 lead before Vermont's Sarah Booker responded with a score to cut her team's deficit to 3-1.
Freshman midfielder Miriam Godfrey (Lexington, Mass.) then sandwiched her first of three goals around a pair of markers from sophomore Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.). Vermont sophomore Anne Visser countered with a goal to make it 6-2, but the Catamounts would be shut out the rest of the afternoon.
Senior Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.) started the string of 12 unanswered goals with her first of two tallies. McMahon completed her hat trick just under two minutes later before Godfrey connected for her second of the day. Freshmen Hope Zelinger (Ellicott City, Md.) and Jill Blauvelt (Suffern, N.Y.) capped off the first half with goals for the Minutewomen.
The UMass offensive attack continued to roll after the intermission. McMahon netted two more goals in the second half, while Ingraffea, Emery, Blauvelt, Godfrey and Andrea Valachovic (Framingham, Mass.) each scored once for the Minutewomen.
Sophomore Cyndi Doyle (Bridgewater, Vt.) and senior Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) combined to make five saves for the Minutewomen, while Kate McBride stopped 14 shots for the Catamounts. UMass returns to action on Saturday, March 31, when it hosts Hofstra at 9:30 a.m. at Garber Field for a non-conference game.
