AMHERST, Mass. -- The Hofstra University women's lacrosse team used a strong second half to distance itself from the University of Massachusetts and claim a 10-6 win over the Minutewomen this morning at Richard F. Garber Field.
Leading 7-5 at the start of the final stanza, the Pride outscored UMass 3-1 to improve their record to 6-1 on the season. UMass dropped to 1-5 overall with the loss.
Hofstra opened the game with goals in the first seven minutes from Jessica Gaither, Kristin Marshall and Kathleen Mikowski. Senior midfielder Rachel Ingraffea (Ithaca, N.Y.) responded with two quick goals to cut the Pride lead to 3-2, but that would be as close as UMass would get all morning.
From that point, the visitors scored four consecutive markers to pad its lead to 7-2. However, the Minutewomen trimmed the Hofstra advantage to two goals just before the intermission with three goals of their own. Sophomore midfielder Lydia Robinson (Summit, N.J.) sandwiched a pair of goals around one from sophomore midfielder Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.).
The Pride's Megan Zimmer opened the second half scoring with her second goal of the game to increase her team's lead to 8-6. Robinson completed her hat trick midway through the frame to close the deficit again to two goals, but Zimmer and Grace Vidulich put the game away with a pair of late scores.
Senior co-captain Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y) stopped seven saves for the Minutewomen in her first start of the season. Jackie Carroll made 10 saves for the Pride.
UMass will return to action on Wednesday, April 4, for a road game against Dartmouth. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
