TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team (9-9) opened play at the annual Tallahassee Democrat Tournament with a 1-0 win over No. 22 University of Michigan and then came from behind to beat Troy State University, 4-3, today.
In game one, UMass short stop Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) scored the only run of the game when she crossed home on a wild pitch by Michigan's Marie Bardain the first inning. First baseman Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) went 2-for-3 in the game while second baseman Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 1-for-1, with a walk.
Right-hander Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, B.C.) (5-1) held the Wolverines scoreless on three hits, while strikingout four and walking one, to earn her third straight victory.
The Minutewomen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the Troy State game when center fielder Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) scored before the Trojans caught catcher Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) stealing second.
The Trojans came back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth off a home run, a double and a single to take a 3-1 lead but a two run single by third baseman Cherra 'Scooter' Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) scored right fielder Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) and pinch runner Nicole Wilson (Gaithersburgh, Md.) in the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. With bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Robustelli hit a single to right to score Bakken and put the Minutewomen ahead for good.
Wheeler, Robustelli and Rooney finished the game with two hits apiece while Bakken, Cahalan and Cross each hit one.
Right-hander Jen Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) allowed three runs, two unearned, off six hits in seven innings to earn her second win of the season.
UMass plays the University of Maryland at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 17, before beginning single elimination pool play later in the day.
