Myers, Minutemen Top Temple in Men's Soccer, 5-0

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore forward Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) scored four goals to lead the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Temple here on Sunday afternoon. With the win, UMass moves its record to 11-3 on the season, and remains tied atop the Atlantic 10 with a 6-1 conference record. Temple falls to 2-11-1 on the season, 1-6 in conference action.
Myers put UMass ahead early, scoring his first goal of the day in the game's fifth minute. The Minutemen continued to put offensive pressure on the Owls after the first goal, as senior midfielder Shawn Green (Marshfield, Mass.) fired three excellent shots in the 12th minute, but Temple goalkeeper Patrick Hannigan stopped all three with brilliant saves.
Myers added his second goal in the 22nd minute, taking a Derek Rhodes (Depere, Wis.) pass from the right side, and netting a shot just out of Hannigan's reach. Myers' third goal came just 12 minutes later, as senior defender J.R. Pouncey (Houston, Texas) placed a perfect pass into the penalty box. With that goal, Myers became the first Minuteman to net a hat trick since 1999.
UMass extended its lead in the second half, as Rhodes netted his second goal of the season in the 63rd minute to put the Minutemen ahead 4-0.
Myers capped his career day with his fourth goal of the game, his eighth this season, as he tapped in a perfectly placed heel-flick pass by Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.). It was Morales' 10th assist of the season, making him only the second UMass player ever to total double-digit assist in a single season.
The Minutemen continue Atlantic 10 action next weekend, as they welcome Richmond to Totman field for a 3:00 p.m. match on Friday. UMass will close out the home portion of their schedule next Sunday, when they face George Washington at 1:00 p.m.
