AMHERST, Mass. - Junior forward Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) scored his ninth goal of the season late in the second half, and the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team held on to defeat Siena, 3-2, here on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, UMass moves to 9-3 on the season, while the Saints fall to 4-7-1.
Senior Shawn Green (Marshfield, Mass.) put the Minutemen ahead early, as he blasted a rebound past Siena goalkeeper Jonathan Hicks to give UMass a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
Siena answered quickly, as Paul Ciovacco tied the match with his sixth goal of the season just five minutes after Green's goal. Ciovacco followed his own shot, as senior Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) stopped the first attempt, but couldn't handle the second effort.
Freshman Martin Burwell (Virginia Beach, Va.) then rocketed a shot from 25 yards into the upper-left corner of the goal for his first career score. His goal put UMass ahead 2-1, and came just three minutes after the Saints had tied the match.
The Minutemen remained defensive through most of the second half until Deren and junior forward Ptah Myers (Columbus, Ohio) executed a perfect give-and-go to give UMass a comfortable two-goal advantage.
The Minutemen will return to Atlantic 10 action this weekend, with games against St. Joseph's on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Temple on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
