Men's Soccer Ties Fresno State, 1-1

AMHERST, Mass. -- Sophomore Yuri Morales (Santa Cruz, Calif.) scored at the 72:21 mark to force the game into overtime, as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team tied with Fresno State, 1-1 in the championship game of the 2000 UMass Classic, this afternoon at Totman Field. UMass is now 4-3-1, while the Bulldogs are 5-1-1.
Fresno State's Danny Risch opened the game with a goal off a cross from Tim Metzger at the 3:20 mark. Morales tied the game with a header into the upper left corner from a throw-in by senior Seth Lilburn (Boonton Township, N.J.) at the 72:21 mark to send the game into sudden-victory overtime.
UMass junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made two saves in the first overtime period, including a save on a breakaway. Jeremy Proud made five saves in the game for Fresno State. The Minutemen outshot the Bulldogs, 17-14, while the Bulldogs held a 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
UMass' Shawn Green (Marshfield, Mass.) earned defensive MVP honors for his performance in the two-game tournament, while O'Quinn received co-goalie MVP honors. Green, Morales, junior J.R. Pouncey (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Jeff Deren (Chicopee, Mass.) all earned all-tournament accolades.
The Minutemen return to action when they host St. Bonaventure, on Friday, Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m., in the Atlantic 10 season-opener.
