Men's Soccer Downs St. Bonaventure, 2-1 In Overtime

AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior Benny Hoffman (Allentown, Pa.) scored the game winning goal 3:36 into sudden-victory overtime, as the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team defeated St. Bonaventure, 2-1 this afternoon at Totman Field. UMass improves to 5-3-1 overall (1-0 A-10), while the Bonnies fall to 3-6-0 overall (1-1 A-10).
After a scoreless first half, UMass got on the board when freshman Obie Gravely (Richmond, Va.) put the ball into the left corner of the net from just outside the penalty box with an assist to freshman Dan Colwell (Spencer, Mass.), at the 47:16 mark. The Bonnies answered back a little over a minute later when Nathan Sellers put in a header on a cross from Said Ali at the 48:43 mark.
After a foul on the Bonnies just outside the penalty box, Hoffman shot the ball into the upper right corner of the goal on a direct kick to give UMass the win, at the 93:36 mark.
UMass junior goalie Bryan O'Quinn (Feeding Hills, Mass.) made two saves, while Geoff Mauch stopped five shots for the Bonnies. The Minutemen outshot the Bonnies, 22-7, while the Bonnies held a 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. UMass is now 9-2 all-time versus St. Bonaventure.
The Minutemen return to action on Sunday, Oct. 1, when they host Duquesne at 1:00 p.m., at Totman Field.
