AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Keith Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Jeremy Guski (Mahopac, N.Y.) both had two goals and one assist, to lead the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over 13th-ranked Harvard at Richard F. Garber Field. UMass improves its overall record to 5-5 with the win, while also running its winning streak against New England opponents to seven games. Harvard falls to 6-4 with the loss.
The Minutemen jumped out to an early 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter, behind goals from Guski, junior attackman Rich Kunkel (Centereach, N.Y.) and freshman attackman Kevin Levielle (Delmar, N.Y.). Harvard then stormed back to take a 5-3, scoring five straight goals late in first and early in the second period. Goals from Guski and Gabrielli would tie up the score at 5-5, then the teams began trading goals with the Crimson taking a 7-6 lead into the intermission. Junior midfielder Alex Racioppi (Winchester, Mass.) scored the final UMass goal of the first half.
UMass dominated play early in the third quarter, with Racioppi and Gabrielli scoring goals to give UMass an 8-7 lead. Harvard would score twice late in the period to regain the lead at 9-8, before a goal by senior attackman Mike Janowicz (Upper Arlington, Ohio) tied the score at 9-9 heading into the fourth quarter. There would be only one goal scored in the final period, with Janowicz finding the net off a pass from junior midfielder Chris Gabrielli (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to secure the win at the 14:34 mark.
