AMHERST, Mass.-- Lauren Brady scored four goals to lead Syracuse to an 8-3 victory over the University of Massachusetts in women's lacrosse action this afternoon on Totman Field.
UMass opened the scoring on a goal by junior Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) at the 28:06 mark of the first half. Naber took a feed from senior co-captain Rebecca Minaker (Newton, Mass.) and fired a shot that found the back of the net.
Syracuse responded with four straight goals in the first half. Brady tied the game at 1-1 when she scored off a pass from Kim Wayne. The Orangewomen took the lead on a Katrina Hable goal at the 23:57 mark of the first. Wayne put Syracuse ahead 3-1 with a goal off a feed from Carrie Soults at the 17:57 mark. Hable followed with her second goal of the game with 16 seconds remaining in the first half.
Following a Syracuse goal, UMass cut the lead to 5-2 when Minaker scored an unassisted goal at the 24:24 mark of the second half. Brady responded with two straight Syracuse goals to push the Orangewomen lead back up to 7-2. Senior Melissa Miele (Drexel Hill, Pa.) got one back for UMass, scoring an unassisted goal with a little over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Syracuse put the game away when Brady netted her fourth of the game with just 11 seconds remaining.
Junior goaltender Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, and Clothilde Ewing recorded six saves for the Orangewomen. The loss drops UMass to 0-3 on the season, while Syracuse improves to 2-3 with the win.
UMass returns to action on Tuesday, March 28, when it travels to Durham, N.H. to take on the University of New Hampshire. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
