AMHERST, Mass. -- University of Massachusetts women's lacrosse coach Phil Barnes recorded his first victory at the helm of the Minutewomen program as UMass defeated Vermont, 17-2, on Garber Field this afternoon.
The Minutewomen (1-3) were in control from the opening faceoff until the horn sounded to end the game. UMass jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead and never looked back. Junior Kara DePaula (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) led the Minutewomen with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Christy Ambrose (Framingham, Mass.), senior Sara MacNabb (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and senior Rebecca Minaker (Newton, Mass.) each netted two goals a piece.
Junior Fay Naber (Suffern, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist for the Minutewomen. Freshmen Kelli Kurtz (Schwenksville, Pa.), Jada Emery (Princeton, N.J.) and Leslie Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y.) all scored their first collegiate goals in the win.
The Minutewomen scored the first four goals of the second half to go ahead 16-0 before the Catamounts managed to net two of the last three goals of the game making the final score 17-2 in favor of UMass.
UMass returns to action tomorrow when it hosts the University of New Hampshire on Garber Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
