BOSTON, Mass. -- Boston University scored five unanswered goals to defeat UMass, 5-2, tonight at Wlater Brown Arena. The win advances the Terriers into the Hockey East semifinals next weekend. Boston University (24-8-7) won the best-of-three quarterfinal series with the Minutemen two games to none.
In an evenly played first period, the Minutemen drew first blood when sophomore Darcy King (Barrie, Ont.) fired a shot from the slot that beat Rick DiPietro high to the blocker side with a little over a minute remaining in the period. King finished off a play that started with the forechecking of junior R.J. Gates (Plainville, Conn.). Gates caused a Terrier turnover and then passed over to freshman Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.), who found King wide open in the slot.
The Minutemen took a two-goal lead 2:49 into the second period as senior Jeff Blanchard (Stouffville, Ont.) picked off an errant Terrier pass and fired a shot that found the back of the net giving UMass a 2-0 lead. Boston University cut the Minutemen lead to one when Jack Baker scored his third goal of the series less than two minutes after the Blanchard score. The Terriers knotted the game, 2-2, when Tommi Degerman netted a goal off a pass from Chris Heron.
Boston University broke the tie at the 12:45 mark of the third as Degerman scored an unassisted goal off a UMass defensive zone turnover. The Terriers kept the pressure on, scoring another goal 33 seconds later. John Sabo took a pass from Baker and beat junior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) for the goal. Boston University added its fifth goal of the game with a little more than six minutes remaining in the regulation when Pat Aufiero scored.
Helanen finished the game with 21 saves for the Minutemen. DiPietro recorded 24 saves for the Terriers.
UMass finished the 1999-00 season with an 11-20-5 overall record and a 5-15-4 record in Hockey East.
