BOSTON - Junior goaltender Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) made 35 saves, holding one of the nation's most powerful offenses to one goal, and leading the UMass Minutemen to a 5-1 win over No. 5 Boston College on Saturday night. The win ups UMass' record to 11-17-4 overall and 5-14-3 in Hockey East, while the Eagles drop to 21-10-1 overall and 13-8-1 in league play.
UMass struck early in the first period, capitalizing on a power play opportunity after a Mike Mottau penalty, scoring just 88 seconds into the game. Freshman Tim Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) dug the puck out from behind the net, finding his brother Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) on the wing, who fed junior Kris Wallis (Agassiz, B.C.) right in front of the net for his sixth goal of the season. Jeff Turner added another UMass goal at the 16:59 mark of the first, putting the Minutemen up 2-0.
The Minutemen added another two goals in the second period, going up 4-0. Senior Nathan Sell (Pembroke, Ont.) received a long pass from Jay Shaw (Jamestown, R.I.) from the UMass zone and blasted a shot by BC goalternder Tim Kelleher at the 3:05 mark. After UMass' third goal, BC head coach Jerry York pulled Kelleher and replaced him with junior Scott Clemmensen, who shut out the Minutemen last night. Sophomore Luke Duplessis (Framingham, Mass.) scored his third goal of the season at the 8:18 mark, putting the Minutemen up by four. Duplessis rifled a shot from just above the left circle, hitting the far upper corner of the net on Clemmensen's glove side.
Boston College pulled to within three at the 9:52 mark of the third period with a Blake Bellefeuille goal off a rebounded shot by Brian Gionta. The Minutemen capped off the scoring when junior Ray Geever (Hanson, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season on a breakaway at the 10:53 mark.
Helanen improved to 10-14-2 after another stellar performance. Kelleher took the loss, dropping to 10-5-1 on the season.
The Minutemen return to action on March 3 at New Hampshire for the first game of a home-and-home series with the Wildcats. The final game of the regular season will be at the Mullins Center on Saturday, March 4. Prior to the game's start, the 1999-2000 senior class will be honored. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
