ORONO, Maine - Maine sophomore Matt Yeats was spectacular in net for the Black Bears, making 23 saves and leading Maine to a 5-2 win over UMass in front of a sold out Alfond Arena in Hockey East action Saturday night. The loss drops UMass to 10-16-4 overall and 4-13-3 in Hockey East, while the Black Bears improve to 17-7-4 overall and 8-7-3 in league play.
Maine got on the board first with a power play goal just over six minutes into the game. Maine's Ben Guite deflected a Michael Shutte shot, netting his 13th goal of the season. Maine took a 2-0 advantage at the 9:19 mark of the opening period with a Dan Kerluke goal. Maine intercepted a pass deep in the UMass zone and Kerluke was the recipient of a Ben Guite pass for the Black Bears' second goal.
Maine went up 3-0 just over one minute into the second period with a power play goal by Ben Guite. Guite blasted a shot that came off UMass goaltender Markus Helanen's (Vantaa, Finland) pads and squirted into the net. In a penalty filled period, UMass had a number of scoring chances. The Minutemen had five power play chances, including two five-on-three opportunities but could muster only one goal. Sophomore Randy Drohan (Mississauga, Ont.) blasted a shot from just inside the blue line, netting just his second goal of the season on a power play at the 16:31 mark of the second period.
UMass pulled to within one with a power play goal early in the third period. Sophomore Darcy King (Barrie, Ont.) scored his second goal in as many nights after a Kris Wallis (Agassiz, B.C.) shot took a long rebound right in front of the goal. King gathered in the rebound and rifled the puck past Yeats. Maine's A.J. Begg put Maine up 4-2 with his second goal of the season off a feed from Jim Leger and Brendan Walsh added another Black Bear goal at the 18:34 mark, putting Maine up 5-2.
UMass goaltender Markus Helanen recorded 24 saves in the loss, dropping to 9-13-2 on the year. Yeats improved to 11-5-3 on the season after a 23 save performance.
The Minutemen return to action on Feb. 25 at the Mullins Center for the first of a home-and home series with Boston College. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
