The scoresheet from the season-opening game at No. 3 Wisconsin says everything you need to know about UMass hockey. It is a different season, and it is a different era.
Three UMass players scored their first-career goals in the 9-6 opening-night loss in front of over 10,000 fans at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. Sophomore Jimmy Callahan was the first player to manage the feat, scoring at the 6:08 mark of the first period. Senior Jeff Turner and younger brother, sophomore Tim, each assisted on the score.
Freshmen Thomas P?ck and Scott Horvath both netted their first goals in the 10-goal second period. P?ck scored off a pass from senior defensemen Joey Culgin, while Horvath scored on a power play with assists going to Callahan and Tim Turner. Also making an impact in the game was freshman Mike Warner, who took a number a key faceoffs. Warner logged a lot of ice time, getting a regular shift as a center.

One comforting thing that was not a change, was the consistent play of the Turner brothers in the season-opener. The two brothers combined for eight of the Minutemen's 15 points during the game.
Tim managed to do something that no other Minuteman had done in the past five seasons. He scored five points in a single game. Tim recorded an assist in the first period on Callahan's goal and then recorded his second assist of the game on Horvath's power play goal in the second period. Tim then scored a pair of goals in less than a minute later on in the second period. He added an assist in the third period on Toni S?derholm's goal.
Jeff assisted on Callahan's goal, along with getting an assist on both of Tim's scores in the second period.

During the plane ride out to Wisconsin the flight was interupted by an announcement from the flight attendent, who congratulated assistant coach Bill Gilligan on his recent marriage to the former Jennifer Harris of Danvers, Mass.
Following the announcement the flight attendent presented coach Gilligan with a bottle of wine to commerate the marriage. Sophomore forward J.R. Zavisza was the person responsible for notifying the flight attendent of coach Gilligan's otherwise quiet marriage.

Senior goaltender Markus Helanen did not miss a beat from last season. He replaced Mike Johnson to start the third period of the season-opener and made 20 saves, while only allowing one goal in his 20 minutes of play. Helanen started the next game and made 38 saves against a potent Badger offense, including a number of the highlight reel variety.
