AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Jeff Turner (Saginaw, Mich.) scored two goals in the second period, leading UMass back from a two goal defecit to beat Providence in Hockey East action Wednesday night. The win puts UMass at 10-12-3 overall and 4-9-2 in Hockey East, while the Friars go to 12-12-1 overall and 4-9-0 in league play.
Jon DiSalvatore beat UMass' starting goaltender Mike Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) on a breakaway midway through the first period, putting Providence on the board first. The Friars added another goal just under a minute later when Drew Omicioli beat Johnson at the 11:46 mark of the first period. UMass got on the board with a Toni Soderholm (Helsinki, Finland) goal late in the first period.
Pete Fregoe put the Friars up 3-1 with a wrist shot right in front of the UMass net just 49 second into the second frame. UMass quickly countered with a Turner goal at the 1:24 mark. Turner then knotted the game 3-3 on a tough shot off his own rebound at the 11:10 mark of the period. Senior captain Nathan Sell (Pembroke, Ont.) netted the game winner off a beautiful feed from the blue line by sophomore Randy Drohan (Mississauga, Ont.) at the 16:29 mark of the second period.
Markus Helanen (Vantaa, Finland) picked up the win for the Minutemen, making 16 saves in the final 39 minutes after replacing Johnson. Boyd Ballard took the loss for the Friars, making 25 saves in the first two periods before being replaced by Jamie Vanek.
The Minutemen return to action on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 30, when they travel to Hockey East foe UMass-Lowell for the second game between the two teams this season. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
