AMHERST, Mass. - Men?s soccer senior forward Adam Black (San Jose, Calif.) has been named the WHMP/UMASS Athlete of the Week, it was announced today. Black officially received the award at the weekly sports luncheon this afternoon at the Campus Center.
Black was a key figure in UMass? 3-2 overtime upset of then #12 Washington on Sunday afternoon at Totman Field. He put the Minutemen on the board first with a header off of a crossing pass just over seven minutes into the match. UMass then built a 2-0 lead, but saw it evaporate in the last nine minutes of the game, as the powerful Husky offense put two quick strikes, and nearly a third off a penalty kick, on the board. In the overtime, however, it was Black who took the only shot, and it was the only one that counted. After nudging the ball away from a defender, he put it past the same player, and then shot it past Washington goalkeeper James Dickinson for the game-winner at 101:12. The win moved UMass? record to 5-3 on the year, gave the Minutemen the UMass Classic championship, and pushed them into a #7 New England regional ranking.
Black, who earned second team All-Atlantic 10 honors last season, has scored 11 goals and added two assists in his last fifteen games - a total of 24 points. Black and the Minutemen will return to action this Saturday evening when they travel to Kingston, R.I., to battle Atlantic 10 rival Rhode Island at 5:00 p.m.
