THE WEEK IN REVIEW: UMass went 1-1 on the week, falling to
No. 11 Dartmouth 16-7 on Wednesday, before defeating St. Joseph's
10-2 on Saturday. The split brings the Minutewomen to 5-3 on the
season.
WHAT'S NEXT: UMass has two games this week, returning to
action in Hempstead, N.Y. on Wednesday vs. Hofstra. The Minutewomen
host Syracuse on Totman Field at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. UMass is 3-4
all-time vs. Hofstra, after falling to the Flying Dutchwomen 12-5
last year. This is the first-ever meeting between UMass and
Syracuse.
OFF TO A GREAT START: UMass's 5-3 start through the first
eight games of the season is the school's best start since the
Minutewomen went 6-2 in the 1986 season. It also marks the first
eight-game start above .500 since the 1988 squad was 4-3-1.
UMASS VS. DARTMOUTH: The Minutewomen kept close with the
No. 11 Big Green on Wednesday, trailing just 8-5 at the half. But
Dartmouth rattled off eight straight goals to begin the second half
to take a commanding 16-5 lead which UMass could not overcome.
Senior midfielder Jen Herker (Kennett Square, Pa.) led all UMass
scorers with two goals.
UMASS VS. ST. JOSEPH'S: The Minutewomen added another
tally in the win column on Saturday, defeating St. Joseph's 10-2 in a
superb offensive and defensive effort. Freshman attack Fay Naber
(Suffern, N.Y.) had four goals for the Minutewomen, while junior
attack Laura Korutz (Media, Pa.) had two goals and two assists. Also
scoring multiple points were sophomore attack Noelle Gorski (Cicero,
N.Y.) and Jen Herker, each of whom had two assists.
THE OFFENSIVE MAINSTAY: Laura Korutz continues to fuel the
UMass offense, scoring five points last week on three goals and two
assists. The junior attack has led UMass in scoring each of the
last two years and hasn't missed a step this season, leading all
Minutewomen scorers with 25 points on 20 goals and five assists.
Korutz has at least one goal in every game this season, and has led
the team in scoring in four games. She scored four goals vs. No. 14
Yale and had hat tricks vs. Harvard, Brown and Connecticut.
GOAL TIME: Freshmen goalies Tara Durkin (Jenkintown, Pa.)
and Jen Nardi (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) continue to share time in goal,
each starting one of UMass' games last week. Nardi started vs.
Dartmouth, playing 44 minutes and making 10 saves while Durkin closed
out the game and played the final 16 minutes. Durkin earned the
start vs. St. Joseph's playing the first half and making five saves,
while Nardi played the second half and also made five saves.
HEAD COACH FRANCESCA McCLELLAN: Francesca McClellan is in
her fifth year as head coach of the Minutewoman lacrosse team and
currently posts a 23-41 record. McClellan arrived at UMass in 1993
and assumed the challenge of rebuilding the storied UMass women's
lacrosse program, which had not competed at the varsity level since
1990. Prior to her arrival at UMass, McClellan served as head coach
at Yale from 1986-92, where she was the driving force behind the
resurgence of the Elis' program. She was also a standout performer
during her playing days, twice earning All-America and Ivy League
Player of the Year accolades while at Harvard.
