Callie Sweigart, a five-year member of the UMass field hockey team, joined the program as an assistant coach on July 17, 2013. A three-year starter on defense for the Minutewomen, the fall 2013 season will be Sweigart's first in a coaching roll with Massachusetts.
Sweigart will help develop the UMass defense that only allowed 1.75 goals per game in 2012 and tallied its fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year honor. The Ephrata, Pa., native will also assist in the marketing and operations of the program while simultaneously focusing on recruiting efforts.
'It is extremely exciting to return to UMass as a member of the coaching staff,' Sweigart said. 'UMass provided me with a strong foundation of academics, athletics and culture that I hope to pass on to future members of the program. I am grateful that Carla has allowed me to once again take part in the tradition of excellence that is UMass field hockey.'
In her five seasons as a student-athlete in Amherst, Sweigart helped UMass to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a trio of Atlantic 10 Tournament Championships. UMass won 66 games between 2008-12, including 27 contests against Atlantic 10 foes.
'We are excited to welcome Callie back to the program,' Tagliente said. 'She understands the NCAA system and has invaluable experience working with the top recruitment consulting company for field hockey in our country. Callie brings a tremendous amount of passion, intellect and organizational abilities to the program. She is a great addition to our coaching staff and I am looking forward to working with her.'
Throughout her academic career, Sweigart was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad following each competitive season, while also being lauded on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll as a senior in 2012. In addition, Sweigart qualified for the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team following her first full season of competition with UMass in 2009 and earned a spot on the 2011 A-10 All-Tournament Team.
