Big Third Quarter Leads UConn Past Minutewomen, 12-8

March 07, 2026 | Women's Lacrosse

AMHERST, Mass. – The Massachusetts women's lacrosse team scored the final two first-half goals to pull even at the break, but UConn responded with seven of the first nine second-half tallies, on the way to beating the Minutewomen 12-8 on Saturday at Garber Field. Dylan Lyons led the offense with four points via two goals and two assists while Bridget Valentine caused three turnovers to lead the defense.

"As a group, we need to learn to trust each other a little bit more and trust our connections from practice," said head coach Jana Drummond. "When we get into the games, we get a little bit more hesitant versus just going with the flow and knowing we can trust ourselves and trust in each other to execute out there. We pushed the pace so much more in this fourth quarter and we saw success from that. It's more of just putting the full game together."

Along with Lyons, Lil Hancock and Norah Prizzi each had a goal and assist. Hancock added a game-high five draw controls. Heather Clark and Katie Onderdonk also had two caused turnovers apiece.

The teams traded two-goal runs until early in the third quarter. UConn scored at the 7:54 and 3:25 marks of the first for a 2-0 lead before Lyons had two goals in the span of 1:37 – with 32 seconds left in the first, then just over a minute into the second, both on free-position attempts.

Like the start of the game, the Huskies' O'Brien and Plata gave UConn a 4-2 advantage before Prizzi scored at 6:57. A little later, Valentine capped off a tremendous fast break sequence, evening the score at four at the half.

UConn had a hot start to the third in opening a 6-4 lead, but the Minutewomen pulled within 6-5 (after a Kassidy Morris goal) then 7-6 (after a Lil Hancock score) midway through the stanza.

The Huskies answered with four consecutive goals bridging the end of the third and beginning of the fourth to take an 11-6 lead. UMass pulled within 11-8, but that came with just 48 seconds left and the Huskies' Abby Beran added an insurance goal for the 12-8 final.

Final shots were 33-24 in favor of UConn while the Huskies held a 15-11 edge in groundballs. UMass goalkeeper Bayley Duffy made seven saves, as did UConn goalie Sofia Oximana.

The Minutewomen return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Dartmouth to face the Big Green. Opening draw is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
