Minutewomen Dominate Youngstown State in MAC Opener, 21-3

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The UMass women's lacrosse team played its first-ever MAC game on Saturday and made a strong statement, defeating Youngstown State 21-3. Thirteen different Minutewomen scored a goal, led by eight points from Kassidy Morris. Defensively, UMass caused 10 turnovers on the afternoon, with the combination of Bayley Duffy and Aidan Summer stopping 5-of-8 shots sent their way.
 
With the win, the Minutewomen improve to 6-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. Youngstown State falls to 0-7 and 0-1.
 
"Awesome full team effort and adaptability," said head coach Jana Drummond. "Played the UMass way with all personnel stepping up. Having a few career first goals, you could feel the pride show through from the team. They played for each other and we are proud of them."
 
Morris finished with five points and three assists for her second straight game with 7+ points and fourth this season (in just eight games). She leads the Minutewomen in goals (27), assists (15) and points (42) on the season. Morris is up to 193 career goals, quickly approaching the program's record of 211.
 
Additionally, Ava Connaughton scored the game's first two goals and adding three assists to finish with five points. Dylan Lyons had two goals and two assists, with Katie Onderdonk and Kerri Finneran each scored twice.
 
Youngstown State pulled within 2-1 early, but five straight MInutewomen goals gave UMass a 7-1 advantage early in the second quarter. Lyons and Morris rounded out the first-quarter scoring, with 0:42 and 0:03 on the clock.
 
The Penguins pulled within 7-2 at 11:55 of the second, but the Minutewomen answered with an even bigger run. They reeled off nine straight goals to take a 17-2 advantage late in the third. Morris rounded out the run with consecutive goals, at the 8:27 and 4:49 marks. Connaughton had two of her assists in that stretch as well.
 
Early in the fourth, Youngstown State pulled within 17-3, but four consecutive UMass goals ended the game. Reese Bromby rounded out the scoring with her first-career goal with 5:14 remaining to account for the 21-3 final.
 
Final shots were 42-12 in favor of UMass, with the Minutewomen holding a 25-16 edge in groundballs and 16-10 advantage in draw controls.

UMass returns home on Thursday to host Central Michigan at 1 p.m. in MAC action.
