#19 Boston University Nips Massachusetts Hockey, 1-0

January 09, 2026 | Hockey

AMHERST, Mass. – In a nip and tuck battle to open the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, No. 19 Boston University potted the only goal of the night midway through the second period to hand Massachusetts hockey a 1-0 loss on Friday night at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen fall to 9-10-0 overall and 2-7-0 in Hockey East action, while the Terriers improve to 10-8-1 and 7-5-0 in league action.

"I guess that was the kind of game I was hoping for, a low scoring game," said UMass head coach Greg Carvel. "I challenged our group this week to be a really good defensive team. The whole team played defensive-minded to keep a talented BU team to under two goals and they did that, so I was happy with that. I thought Michael Hrabal's game looks like it's come back, which we need for the second half. We're short bodies. We lost (Mikey) DeAngelo after the first period, we lost (Nick) VanTassell last weekend, so we're a little light up front, but the kids played hard. I was happy with the game. It's too bad the (Owen) Melenbacher shot didn't find the back of the net near the end, but it was a hard fought game, and hopefully another one tomorrow night."

Neither side generated much offensive opportunities in a scoreless first, which ended with BU holding a 7-4 edge in shots.

Midway through the second, Sacha Boisvert centered the puck for Aiden Celebrini, whose initial shot was turned aside by Hrabal, but Jack Harvey was there to clean up the rebound at the 7:49 mark.

The Minutemen had several opportunities to equalize in the third, but were unable to find the back of the net. With 14 minutes remaining in the period, junior Owen Mehlenbacher rang a shot off the post. Then, just under four minutes to play in the contest, sophomore Daniel Jencko split a pair of BU defenders to skate in alone on Mikhail Yegorov but was denied by the goaltender.

The Terriers out-shot UMass, 30-18 on the evening and both teams went 0-for-1 on the power play. Hrabal totaled 29 saves on the night and Yegorov stopped all 18 to record the shutout.

The squads will close out the weekend series tomorrow night, January 10, at 6 p. m. at Agganis Arena.
