Massachusetts Baseball Falls To Fairfield, 10-8

The Minutemen tallied 13 hits, including three home runs on the afternoon.
UMass moved to 9-17-1 overall on the season, while Fairfield improved to 23-8 on the year.
Carter Hanson had a team-best three hits on the day, which included a double, while Jack Beverly, Marc Willi and Sam Hill all registered two hits each. Willi and Hill recorded their third and second home runs, respectively, while Ryan Kolben also had his second long ball of the season. Willi led the way in runs scored with two, while Hill knocked in three runs with Kolben driving in two. Beverly and Willi tallied one RBI apiece.
Overall, the Minutemen tallied 13 hits on the afternoon with three home runs.
UMass took the lead early in the second frame, 5-0. Willi led off with a single up the middle, followed by a single from Reece McCarthy. Hill blasted a shot over the left center field hedges for a three-run homer, marking his second of the season. With two outs, Braden Sullivan hit a single to left field before Beverly doubled down the left field line to drive home Sullivan to make it a 4-0 contest. Beverly then scored on a passed ball to push the Minutemen ahead.
Massachusetts extended its lead in the third as Willi hit a leadoff long ball for his third of the year to make it a 6-0 game.
In the top of the fourth, Fairfield got on the board with a solo home run, but the Minutemen plated two in the bottom half of the inning. Hanson took his place on first after being walked with two outs, before Kolben blasted a shot over the left field fence to lead 8-1.
The Stags put up a four spot in the seventh to cut the deficit to three, making it an 8-5 game. Fairfield added two in the eighth to make it a one-run game in favor of the Minutemen. The Stags pushed across three runs to lead 10-8. UMass was unable to complete a rally in the bottom half of the final frame as Fairfield won 10-8.
Mikey Jensen (2-1) had the loss for Massachusetts, going 0.2 innings with three runs on one hit, walking three and no strikeouts. Jack Sheldon received the win for Fairfield, allowing no runs, no hits, no walks and dealing no strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Will Fox earned the save, giving up one hit and striking out one in one complete inning.
Massachusetts hits the road for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, on Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13. First pitch Friday is set for 2 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. The series concludes Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
