Massachusetts Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Richmond

The Minutemen claimed a 12-6 win in game two to tie up the series.

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball split the doubleheader with Richmond on Saturday at Pitt Field. Richmond earned a 9-3 win in game one of the day, before UMass claimed a 12-6 victory in game two.  

UMass moved to 10-18-1 overall on the season and 4-10 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Richmond sits at 23-10 overall with a 6-8 league record.

Massachusetts and Richmond match up in the series finale on Sunday, April 13 at 12 p.m. on EPSN+.

Game 1
Richmond 9, Massachusetts 3


Massachusetts had one hit each from Anthony Tirado, Carter Hanson and Matt Travisano, which included a double from Hanson. Tirado, Braden Sullivan and Hanson tallied one run apiece, while Hanson registered two RBI and Travisano had one.

UMass got on the board first to take an early 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Tirado led off with a single, before Sullivan was walked. A ground out advanced Tirado and Sullivan to third and second, respectively. Hanson doubled to right center field to drive in Tirado and Sullivan to lead, 2-0. Hanson, then added a run on and fielding error.

Richmond took a run back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 game. The Spiders pushed across three more in the second with an RBI single and a two-run single to take the lead at 4-3.

Richmond added to its lead in the third with a run, before tacking on another in the fifth. Three more runs in the eighth helped the Spiders win 9-3 in game one of the day.

Robbie O'Connor (2-4) had the loss for the Minutemen, allowing six runs on 12 hits, walking three and striking out one in 4.2 innings. Esteban Rodriguez (2-1) received the win for the Spiders, giving up three runs on as many hits, three walks and dealing three strikeouts in six complete innings. Ryan Bike earned the save allowing no runs, no hits, a walk and four strikeouts in three innings of work.

Massachusetts 12, Richmond 6


Travisano registered a team-leading three hits, with Tirado, Jack Beverly and Marc Willi following with two each. Beverly led the team in runs with three and in RBI with a career-high five, while recording his seventh home run of the season. Travisano, Reece McCarthy and Ryan Kolben also contributed two runs apiece, while five Minutemen had one RBI each.

Richmond took the early 2-0 lead in the first, but Massachusetts claimed the lead in the top of the third with five runs. Back-to-back-to-back singles loaded the bases, before Travisano contributed a single of his own to score McCarthy. Beverly doubled down the left field line, allowing Kolben, Tirado and Travisano across the dish to give the Minutemen a 4-2 lead. With two outs, Willi hit an RBI single to score Beverly, extending UMass' lead to 5-2.

The Spiders added another run in the bottom of the third to make it a 5-3 contest. Richmond knotted up the game at five apiece with two more runs scored in the fourth.

With Sullivan and Jared Muñoz on base in the fifth, McCarthy hit an RBI single up the middle, pushing Sullivan across the plate, as Massachusetts reclaimed a 6-5 lead. UMass extended its lead in the seventh with a leadoff home run from Beverly, marking his seventh of the year.

The Minutemen continued to add to its total in the eighth, plating five runs. Kyle Hoog scored on an RBI single from Kolben, before a bases loaded walk helped McCarthy touch home plate. Hanson hit a single to center field to drive in Kolben to make it a 10-5 game. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed Travisano and Beverly score to pull ahead, 12-5.

Richmond tacked on one more run in the ninth, but UMass was able to hold on to a 12-6 win. 

Mikey Jensen (3-1) received the winning decision for UMass, allowing one run on three hits, walking one with no strikeouts in three complete innings of work. Chase Topolski (2-4) had the loss for Richmond, giving up one run on five hits, walking one and no strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
