Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball hosts the Harvard Crimson on Tuesday, April 1, at Earl Lorden Field, for the Opening Round of the 34th Baseball Beanpot. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. on ESPN+, with Tuesday's results determining placement in the tournament's consolation and championship games on Tuesday, April 29, at Fenway Park.

UMass holds a 9-12-1 overall record with a series loss to Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island, while Harvad sits at 2-18 overall on the season. The Crimson are coming off a series loss to Yale last weekend.

Recap in a Minute
UMass dropped its a-10 series against Rhode Island, 1-2. The Minutemen claimed a 6-3 win over the Rams in game one of the series.

Jack Beverly and Marc Willi led the team in hits with two apiece, which included a career-best two home runs from Beverly for his fifth and sixth of the year, and a double from Willi. Beverly scored a team-best two runs, while registering a team-high two RBI. Anthony Tirado and Braden Sullivan had one RBI each, with Sullivan recording his second homer of the year.

Robbie O'Connor went seven complete innings with no runs, three hits, three walks and three strikeouts on the day to earn the win.

Minutemen in the Beanpot
Massachusetts has competed annually in the Beanpot since 1996 and captured the tournament crown six times (1996-98, 2000, 2008, 2012). Perhaps one of the most notable Beanpot pitching performances in program history came on April 22, 1997, when former Minuteman Scott Barnsby dealt a no-hitter at Fenway Park in the Semifinals against Northeastern. Barnsby's no-no was the first within the confines of the historic ballpark since 1965 and first such nine-inning performance by a UMass pitcher since 1957.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Beanpot Tournament was canceled, and the 2021 tournament was not held.

In the tournament, UMass holds a 25-28 overall record, while holding the advantage, 12-7, over Harvard in the series.

It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 24 home runs in 22 games played from 11 Minutemen. Beverly leads the team with six homers, followed by Hanson with five. Tirado, Jared Muñoz, Sullivan and Willi all have two each, while Michael Toth, Sam Hill, Ryan Kolben, Mitchell Schroeder and Gavin O'Brien registered one homer each.

Additionally, UMass registered at least one home run in 10 of its last 15 games, while recording two in back-to-back games twice this season -  at Coppin State (3/2) and at Quinnipiac (3/4), and at Navy (3/8-3/9), and recording a season-best five at Towson (3/19).

Tirado posted his first career long ball in game one of three at Coppin State (2/28), before hitting his second of the year in game three of the series at Coppin State (3/2). Hanson had homers in back-to-back games with his first of the year coming at Coppin State (3/2) and his second at Quinnipiac (3/4). Beverly tallied his first home run of the season at Quinnipiac (3/4).

Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2025 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 142nd season. Twenty-two members of the team are back from the 2024 campaign, while 13 players join for their first season in Amherst, including 10 freshen and three transfers.

Keeping it in the Family
The 2025 season marks the 59th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Eighth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).

This is the second longest streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.

On Deck
Massachusetts continues at home, welcoming Dayton for a three-game A-10 series starting on Friday, April 4 through Sunday, April 6. Friday's contest at Earl Lorden will begin at 3 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. First pitch for the series finale is set for 12 p.m.
