Massachusetts Baseball Falls To Harvard, 10-3, In Beanpot Consolation

Willi recorded first collegiate homer with a career-high three RBI in the loss.

BRIGHTON, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to Harvard University, 10-3, in the Second Round of the Baseball Beanpot at Harrington Athletics Village on Tuesday afternoon.
 
The Minutemen fall to 9-18 on the year, while the Crimson improve to 6-19 overall.  
 
Marc Willi went 2-for-4 on the day, including his first career home run, to lead the team. He also tallied a run and a career-best three RBI. Matt Travisano, Mike Gervasi, Carter Hanson and Ryan Kolben had one hit each, while Travisano and Hanson also scored one run apiece for UMass.
 
After three scoreless innings, Harvard broke through first with four runs in the fourth. In the fifth, Massachusetts cut the deficit in half, making it a 4-2 contest. With two outs, Hanson hit a single up the middle, while Willi stepped up the plate and cranked a shot over the fence for a two-run homer, marking the first of his career.
 
The Crimson plated two more runs in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 6-2. Harvard tacked two runs in the eighth and two in the top of the ninth. The Minutemen added one run in the bottom half of the final frame, with UMass earning back-to-back walks for Travisano and Gervasi. With two outs on the board, Willi singled down the left field line to drive in Travisano, but it was not enough as Harvard went on to win 10-3.
 
Andrew Middleton (1-1) took the loss for the Minutemen, giving up four runs on three hits, walking three and striking out three in 3.1 innings pitched. Brian Dowling (1-2) earned the win for the Crimson, tossing six complete innings with two runs allowed on five hits, no walks and four strikeouts.
 
UMass takes a trip to Fairfield, Connecticut, to face Fairfield on Wednesday, April 10, at 3 p.m. on Stags Sports Network.
