Eighth inning comeback effort falls short for the Minutemen.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell, 13-5, to Harvard in the Opening Round of the Beanpot Championships on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The Minutemen will take on Boston College in the Beanpot Consolation game at Fenway Park on April 29.

UMass moved to 9-13-1 overall on the year, while Harvard sits at 3-18 overall.

After three scoreless innings, Harvard scored five runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The Crimson added to its lead in the top of the fifth, plating three to make it an 8-0 lead. UMass got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth as Travisano touched the plate on Schroeder's bases loaded walk, making it an 8-1 game.

Harvard scored another run in the top of the eighth to lead, 9-1, before Massachusetts tacked on four in the bottom half of the inning. Four straight walks allowed Willi to come home, before a single to right field from Travisano helped Kolben cross the dish to make it a 9-3 contest. A wild pitch with the bases loaded saw O'Brien score. The Minutemen cut the deficit to four runs with a sacrifice fly from Beverly to score Tirado, making it a 9-5 game.

The Crimson took back the four runs in the final frame to extend their lead and come away with a 13-5 win.
