Massachusetts Baseball Drops Series Finale To Rhode Island

Gavin O’Brien registered his first career home run on the day.
UMass moved to 9-12-1 overall on the season and 3-6 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Rhode Island improved at 15-12 overall with a 6-3 league record.
Jack Beverly led the team with two hits, which included a double. Six Minutemen tallied one hit each, as Gavin O'Brien recorded his first collegiate home run, while Carter Hanson added his fifth double of the year. Anthony Tirado totaled a team-best two runs with five players batting in a run.
Rhode Island scored first in the top of the first with a home run, before UMass tied up the game in the bottom half of the inning. Tirado led off with a walk, followed by Braden Sullivan taking first after being hit by a pitch. Hanson walked to load up the bases, before Matt Travisano hit a sacrifice fly to aid Tirado across the plate, making it a 1-1 game.
URI reclaimed the lead at 3-1 with a two-run single up the middle in the second. The Minutemen plated two runs in the fifth to knot the game up at three apiece. After Hanson reached on a fielder's choice, he advanced to second on a passed ball. Travisano sat at first after being hit by a pitch, with Marc Willi following with a single to right field to score Hanson. Jared Muñoz had a singled of his own through the right side, allowing Travisano to touch the plate.
UMass took a 5-3 lead in the sixth frame, as O'Brien led off with a solo long ball over the right field hedges to put Massachusetts up, 4-3. Tirado hit a single to the shortstop and advanced to second on a balk. With one out, Beverly singled through the left side, as Tirado ran to third. A fielder's choice for Hanson scored Tirado to give UMass the two run lead.
The Rams pushed across a run on a solo homer in the seventh, before a two-RBI double put Rhode Island ahead, 6-5, in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, Massachusetts tied up the game at 6-6. Beverly double to left field, before Hanson hit a double to right center field to drive in Beverly.
Rhode Island plated 11 runs in the final frame to pick up the 17-6 win on the afternoon.
Sam Belliveau (0-2) had the loss for Massachusetts tossing three innings with five runs on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Braeden Perry (2-1) earned the win for Rhode Island, allowing one run on two hits, walking one and dealing four strikeouts in two innings of work.
