Baseball Splits Friday Doubleheader With Rhode Island

The Minutemen secured a 6-3 win in game one, as the Rams took game two, 13-1.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball split the doubleheader with Rhode Island, winning 6-3 in game one, before falling in game two, 13-1, on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
UMass moved to 9-11-1 overall on the season and 3-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Rhode Island sits at 14-12 overall with a 5-3 league record.
Massachusetts and Rhode Island face off in the series finale on Saturday, March 29, at 12 p.m. on EPSN+.
Game 1
Massachusetts 6, Rhode Island 3
Jack Beverly and Marc Willi led the team in hits with two apiece, which included a career-best two home runs from Beverly for his fifth and sixth of the year, and a double from Willi. Beverly scored a team-best two runs, while registering a team-high RBI. Anthony Tirado and Braden Sullivan had one RBI each, with Sullivan recording his second home run of the year.
UMass' offense got off to a quick start to take an early lead. The Minutemen pushed across four runs in the second, highlighted by a leadoff home run by Beverly, marking his fifth of the season. Back-to-back errors from Rhode Island allowed Carter Hanson and Willi to cross the dish, before a sacrifice bunt from Tirado aided Michael Toth to touch home plate, giving UMass a 4-0 lead.
The Minutemen continued its momentum offensively with back-to-back home runs to start off the third. Sullivan blasted a shot over the left center field hedges for his second homer of the year, followed by Beverly with his second long ball of the day, and sixth of the season, to pull UMass ahead, 6-0.
In the eighth, the Rams got on the board with a two-run double down the left field line to make it a 6-2 game, before adding one more in the final frame, but the Massachusetts defense held off Rhode Island from scoring more to come away with a 6-3 victory.
Robbie O'Connor (2-3) went seven complete innings with no runs, three hits, three walks and three strikeouts on the day to earn the win. Bobby McDonough received his first save of the year, allowing three runs on three hits, a walk and dealing two strikeouts in two innings of work.
Jeremy Urena (4-1) took the loss for Rhode Island, allowing six runs on four hits, a walk and five strikeouts in five complete innings.
Game 2
Rhode Island 13, Massachusetts 1
Gavin O'Brien registered two hits to lead the team, including a double, followed by five Minutemen with one hit apiece. Hanson tallied the lone run for UMass, while O'Brien batted in the run.
Rhode Island got on the board first in the second, scoring on a wild pitch, before adding two more runs in the third. A five-run fourth pushed the Rams ahead, 8-0, and led in the fifth, 11-0, with three more runs plated.
The Minutemen scored in the seventh inning as O'Brien doubled down the left field line with two outs to drive in Hanson and make it an 11-1 contest. URI, ultimately, tacked on two more runs in the final frame to win 13-1 in game two.
Drew Sliwkowski (0-1) had the loss for UMass, going 2.2 innings with three runs, two hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Trystan Levesque (2-0) secured the win for Rhode Island, giving up no runs, four hits, three walks and striking out five in six complete innings of work.
UMass moved to 9-11-1 overall on the season and 3-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Rhode Island sits at 14-12 overall with a 5-3 league record.
