Massachusetts Baseball Falls, 20-15, In Midweek Game At Towson

The Minutemen tallied a season-best five home runs on the afternoon.
UMass moved to 6-8-1 overall on the season, while Towson improved to 7-15 on the year.
Jack Beverly sat atop the leaderboard with three hits, followed by Anthony Tirado, Jared Muñoz, Gavin O'Brien and Michael Toth with two hits apiece. Muñoz led with a career-best two home runs for the Minutemen, while Carter Hanson, Marc Willi and Toth had one each. Hanson plated a team-leading three runs, with five Minutemen scoring two apiece. Muñoz registered a career-high four RBI. Willi tallied three RBI and Toth and Jack Peters both contributed two.
In 11 straight contests, Massachusetts scored first, as Hanson led off the top of the second with a walk. With two outs, Toth registered his fourth double of the season to drive home Hanson to make it a 1-0 contest.
Towson knotted up the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second with a lead off solo home run. The Tigers added 10 more runs to take an 11-1 lead.
Back-to-back homers in the third helped the Minutemen cut the deficit. Tirado took his place at first after being hit by a pitch, before stealing second. Muñoz stepped up to the plate with one out and recorded his first collegiate home run to score two. Hanson followed with a solo shot over the right field wall for back-to-back homers to make it an 11-4 game. O'Brien, then hit a single, as Willi was hit by a pitch and Toth was walked to load up the bases. Peters registered a two-run single, as O'Brien and Willi crossed the dish to get back within five a 11-6.
Muñoz recorded his second long ball of the day, driving home Braden Sullivan after he led off with a walk in the fourth to bring the Massachusetts within three at 11-8. UMass added to its total in the top of the fifth with Toth touching home plate on an RBI single from Tirado, before an RBI single from Beverly allowed Tirado to come across the dish to get within one at 11-10. The Tigers extended their lead to 14-10 in bottom of the inning with a three-run homer.
Toth registered his first homer of the season for UMass to make it a 14-11 game in the top of the sixth frame, but Towson answered back with a lead off solo home run of its own to push ahead, 15-11 in the bottom of the inning. Towson tacked on four more runs in the seventh to lead 19-11.
Willi registered his second home run of the year in the top of the eighth to score three and make it a 19-14 game. It also marked the fifth homer of the game for the Minutemen, making it a season high. The Tigers pulled ahead by six runs with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
UMass' Beverly led off the final frame with a single, before advancing to second on a passed ball. A fielder's choice helped O'Brien take first, while Beverly came home to score, making it a 20-15 contest. The late rally was not enough, though, as Towson came away with the win.
Sam Belliveau (0-1) had the loss for Massachusetts, finishing the day with six runs on four hits, four walks and a strikeout in 1.1 innings. Nate Nabholz (3-0) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits, a walk and striking out two on the day to receive the win.
Massachusetts returns to A-10 competition with a three-game road series against Fordham in Bronx, New York, on Friday, March 21 through Sunday, March 23. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, before a 1 p.m. start on Saturday. Sunday's game begins at 12 p.m., with all three games streamed on ESPN+.
