Baseball Splits Twin Bill With Davidson

Minutemen win game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, 13-8, before falling in game two, 13-10.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – University of Massachusetts baseball split the doubleheader with Davidson College on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. Massachusetts earned a 13-8 victory in game one of the day, while Davidson took the series finale, 13-10, to claim the series.  

UMass moved to 6-7-1 overall and 1-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Davidson improved to 6-12 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.  

Massachusetts sets for a midweek contest on the road against Towson in Towson, Maryland, on Wednesday, March 19, at 3 p.m.

Matt Travisano led the Minutemen in hits with three, followed by Braden Sullivan and Carter Hanson with two apiece, with Sullivan hitting his sixth double of the season. Jared Muñoz, Sam Hill and Jack Peters had one hit each. Hanson sat atop the leaderboard in runs with a career-high matching four on the day, as Ryan Kolben scored three and Sullivan tallied two. Four other Minutemen plated a run for UMass. Travisano and Peters contributed two RBI, as Anthony Tirado, Jack Beverly, Muñoz and Hanson had one.

For the ninth straight game, Massachusetts scored first. Back-to-back walks put Sullivan and Beverly on second and first, respectively. With two outs, Sullivan and Beverly stole third and second, respectively, but a throwing error on Davidson's catcher helped Sullivan come across the dish to give UMass the 1-0 lead.

Davidson knotted up the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the opening frame with a solo home run.

The Minutemen scored four in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead. Kolben started off with a walk, before back-to-back singles from Hanson and Travisano loaded up the bases. A wild pitch allowed Kolben to touch home plate, as Hanson scored on a ground out to make it a 3-1 game. Travisano scored on a wild pitch, as well, with Tirado at the plate. After Tirado walked, Sullivan singled to advance Tirado to second. Tirado moved to third on a throwing error by the pitcher and a sacrifice fly from Beverly aided Tirado to cross the plate.

The Wildcats plated two runs in the bottom of the second inning, as the Minutemen held a 5-3 lead.

After back-to-back-to-back walks to load the bases in the fourth, a wild pitch helped Mitchell Schroeder score and extend UMass' lead, 6-3. The Minutemen added two more runs in the inning to take an 8-3 lead. Davidson took back two runs with a two-run homer to make it an 8-5 contest in the bottom of the fourth.

UMass pulled ahead, 9-5, as Hanson touched the plate on an RBI single from Travisano in the fifth. Massachusetts added four more runs in the top of the sixth with Sullivan, Beverly and Kolben scoring on RBI singles and Hanson came home after Tirado was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to lead 13-5.

Davidson tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth, before adding another in the seventh to make it a 13-7 game, in favor of the Minutemen. A sacrifice fly in the eighth gave the Wildcats another run, but UMass held off Davidson in the final frame to win 13-8.

Callen Powers started on the hill for UMass, tossing 3.2 innings with five runs allowed on six hits, one walk and a strikeout, before Mikey Jensen (1-0) entered the game and received the winning decision. Jensen tossed 2.1 innings with one run on one hit, five walks and three strikeouts dealt. Drew Sliwkowski earned his first collegiate save allowing two runs, two hits, two walks and striking out a career-best six in three innings of work.

 Isaac Fix (1-2) of Davidson had the loss after giving up eight runs on three hits, walking seven and striking out two in two complete innings.

Jack Beverly posted a team-leading two hits, including a home run, with three RBI and a run on the day. Six Minutemen followed behind with one hit ach, which included Sullivan's first homer of the season and a double from Michael Toth. Tirado, Sullivan and Toth tallied two runs apiece, while Sullivan registered three RBI alongside Beverly. Tirado contributed two RBI on the night.

UMass scored first for the 10th game in a row, earning three runs in the opening frame. Tirado was walked to take his place at first to leadoff the game, before stealing second on a passed ball. After Sullivan was walked, Beverly recorded his third long ball of the year over the left field wall to give UMass a 3-0 lead.

The Minutemen extended their lead in the top of the fourth, tacking on three more runs. Toth started off the inning with a double, before advancing to third on a fly out. Tirado was walked again, as Sullivan then stepped up and blasted a three-run shot into left center field to make it a 6-0 lead for Massachusetts. Davidson put up five runs in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-5 contest.

Massachusetts tacked on three more runs in the fifth on a single through the left side from Tirado to push ahead, 9-5. The Wildcats cut the deficit to one at 9-8 with three runs on two home runs in the sixth.  
UMass scored another run on a wild pitch to pull ahead by two at 10-8 in the seventh.

Davidson pulled within a run with a solo homer in the eighth, making it a close 10-9 game, before tying it up at 10-10 in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double. The Wildcats came away with a walk-off victory after recording a three-run long ball to win 13-10.

Adam Merritt (0-1) had the loss for UMass after going 2.2 innings with five runs on six hits, three walks and a career-best four strikeouts. Parker Jones (1-0) earned the win for Davidson, allowing no runs, one hit, walking four and striking out one in 2.1 innings of work.
