March 01, 2025 | Baseball

The Minutemen’s 22 runs were the most runs scored since the 2022 season.

HANOVER, Md. – University of Massachusetts baseball led start to finish in game two of the series at Coppin State to come away with a 22-2 victory in seven innings on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.

The 22 runs marked the most runs in a win for UMass since April 1, 2022, when the team won 23-7 over Saint Jospeh's. It also marks the 24th time in program history the Minutemen scored 20 or more runs.

Carter Hanson totaled a team-high three hits, as Anthony Tirado and Jared Muñoz had two apiece. Eight other Minutemen tallied a hit. Tirado scored three runs, while six players contributed two runs each with seven other Minutemen crossing the plate. Muñoz registered a career-high five RBI, followed closely behind by Jack Peters and Hanson with three, and Tirado with two. Tirado also stole three bases, alongside Matt Travisano, Michael Toth and Sam Hill stealing on each.

Hanson recorded two doubles on the day, along with Muñoz, Tirado and Gavin O'Brien hitting the first doubles of their career. Reece McCarthy registered the first triple of his career on the day.

UMass took a quick 6-0 lead in the opening frame. Tirado stole home to score the first run, before a three-run double from Muñoz aided the Minutemen to a 4-0 lead. Massachusetts scored two more runs on a ground-rule double by Jack Peters to make it a 6-0 contest.

The second inning saw a double down the left field line from Hanson that scored Kolben. A seven-run third frame extended the Minutemen's lead to 14-0. Hanson and Toth contributed doubles, with Toth driving in two runs.

The Minutemen pushed across seven more runs in the top of the sixth as Sam Hill scored on a double from Tirado, before Peters ran home on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly from Gill Dolan helped Tirado head home, while Reece McCarthy and Hanson each crossed the dish on a wild pitch. A bases-loaded walk sent Zack Zaetta from third to home, while Vance Bonior was hit by a pitch to send Kevin Schnupp to the dish to extend UMass' lead to 21-0.

Coppin State tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 21-2 contest.  In the seventh, Gavin O'Brien added another run for Massachusetts off a single from Schnupp.

Massachusetts held off the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh to come out on top, 22-2.
