Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball continues its road stint with a trip to Hanover, Maryland, for a three-game series against Coppin State at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Minutemen and Eagles square off on Friday, February 28 through Sunday, March 2.
The weekend matchup begins on Friday at 3 p.m., with first pitch on both Saturday and Sunday slated for 1 p.m.
UMass holds a 1-2 overall record on the season, while Coppin State is 1-5 on the year, including a 1-4 mark.
Recap in a Minute
Massachusetts faced Bethune-Cookman last weekend in Dayton Beach, Florida, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The Wildcats claimed the three-game series, 2-1, as the Minutemen secured a 4-3 win in game two last Saturday in 10 innings.
A three-run sixth inning for Massachusetts aided the team to a 3-1 lead, as Gavin O'Brien led off the top of the inning with a single. Braden Sullivan followed with a bunt to advance O'Brien to second, before a wild pitch put O'Brien and Sullivan in scoring position. Matt Travisano singled to bring home O'Brien and Sullivan. With Mitchell Schroeder at the plate, Travisano stole second, and an RBI single from Schroeder allowed Travisano to touch home plate.
The Wildcats tied up the game in the bottom half of the sixth with two runs. Through the final three innings, the two teams remained knotted up at 3-3, forcing extras. Sullivan started off the 10th with a double before Travisano took his place at first after being hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt from Schroeder moved Sullivan and Travisano to third and second, respectively. Beverly hit a sacrifice fly as Sullivan tagged up and ran home to give the Minutemen the 4-3 victory.
Andrew Middleton entered the game in the bottom of the sixth, tossing 4.1 innings. The freshman allowed no runs, no hits walked three and struck out a career-high 11 to receive the win on the night.
All-Time vs. Coppin State
The Minutemen and the Eagles will meet for the first time in program history.
Meet the Minutemen
A solid mix of returners and newcomers compose the 2025 edition of the Minutemen as the squad begins its 142nd season. Twenty-two members of the team are back from the 2024 campaign, while 13 players join for their first season in Amherst, including 10 freshen and three transfers.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2025 season marks the 59th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Eighth-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
Massachusetts continues on the road with a trip to Annapolis, Maryland, to take on Navy for three games starting Friday, March 7, through Sunday, March 9. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, with both Saturday and Sunday's games beginning at 1 p.m.
