NEWTON, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer defeated Boston College, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Newton Soccer Complex. Junior forward Nia Hislop collected three points on the day, notching a goal and an assist.
Massachusetts improved to 2-2-1 overall on the year, while Boston College received its first loss of the year, moving to 5-1-0.
Both teams had a strong defensive stand in the opening 45 minutes, as neither team could find the back of the net. UMass took one shot, while Boston College took four, including one on target. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Bella Mendoza came up with the save for Massachusetts, as the half ended with a 0-0 draw.
Senior midfielder Bella Recinos put home a goal early in the second half in the 48th minute. Senior forward Chandler Pedolzky picked up the ball in the middle of the field, sending a pass towards Hislop in open field. Hislop dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box before crossing it over to Recinos in the middle of the box. A one-touch with her right foot, Recinos booted the ball into the top left of the net to give the Minutewomen the 1-0 lead.
Hislop doubled up the lead for Massachusetts for her first goal of the year in the 81st minute. After an initial shot from graduate student forward Grace Pinkus that was saved, Hislop buried her shot in the bottom right of the goal off the rebound. Boston College cut the deficit in half at the 84:03 mark, as Sophia Lowenberg scored for the Eagles.
The Eagles outshot the Minutewomen, 11-7, and took nine corner kicks to UMass' six. Hislop led the way with three shots, followed by Recinos with two, while Pinkus and graduate student forward Karina Groff had one shot apiece.
Mendoza allowed only one goal and stopped four shots throughout the full 90 minutes of the contest in net.
Massachusetts continues its non-conference schedule with a home match against Northeastern on Thursday, September 5, at 4 p.m. at Rudd Field on ESPN+.
