AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts (0-0-2, 0-0-0 A10) takes the field of Rudd Field for the first time this season on Monday, taking on Providence (1-1-1, 0-0-0 BEC) at 4:00 p.m. in a Labor Day home opener. Action will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Minutemen are coming off their second-straight scoreless draw, after leaving Smithfield, R.I. tying with the defending America East Champions, Bryant University. Senior goalkeeper Alex Geczy recorded his second clean sheet for UMass, saving three shots.
Keeping it Clean
Alex Geczy begins the season with two clean sheets on the road against Siena and Bryant. The senior netminder has faced 15 total shots thus far, recording six saves.
Preseason Standout
Alec Hughes returns for his fifth season in the maroon and white, coming into the 2024 campaign ranked at No. 6 in Top Drawer Soccer's Men's DI Preseason Top-100. Hughes was also named to TDS's Preseason First-Team Best XI and the Atlantic 10's Preseason All-Conference.
A Look at the Squad
UMass returns 16 players from last year's roster including Hughes and fellow graduate student Mike Willis.
Additionally, the Minutemen welcome nine newcomers featuring Dean Linden (Fr.), Sean Fernandez-Davila (Fr.), Joseph Bianco (Jr.), Johan Feilscher (Gr.), Kyle Stenzel (Gr.), Bilal Hersi (Gr.), Chris Giglio (Gr.), Layton Purchase (Gr.), and Oliver Akintade (Gr.).
Scouting Providence
UMass meets with Providence coming off of a 2023 matchup that saw the Minutemen overcome the Friars in a 3-2 affair. The last time Providence journeyed to Rudd Field dates to 1994, where Massachusetts prevailed in a 3-0 shutout. UMass leads the All-Time series 11-10.
Providence posted an 8-6-3 record last season, going 4-2-2 in Big East play. The Friars advanced to the Semifinals of the Big East Tournament, falling to the second-seeded Xavier 1-0.
