Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Rutgers, 1-0, In Home Opener

Bella Recinos provided the game’s only goal in the 81st minute, while Bella Mendoza posted her 12th career shutout.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer picked up a 1-0 shutout win over Rutgers University on Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. Senior midfielder Bella Recinos put home the game's lone goal in the 81st minute, while graduate student goalkeeper Bella Mendoza came away with her 12th career shutout.
Massachusetts improved to 1-2-0 on the season, while Rutgers moved to 1-1-1 overall on the year.
In the opening half, Rutgers took seven shots with UMass not having a shot recorded. The Scarlet Knights controlled most of the possession in the first 45 minutes, but the two programs remained scoreless heading into halftime.
During the second half, Rutgers maintained most of its control before Massachusetts recorded its first shot at the 74:46 mark. Graduate student Grace Pinkus sent a ball towards the net that was blocked by the Scarlet Knights, before senior Chandler Pedolzky took a touch and crossed the ball into the 18-yard box. The ball was headed out by Rutgers, as Recinos corralled it and dribbled it back into the box. A left-footed boot by Recinos found its way to the top right of the net at the 80:10 mark to give the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead.
UMass held on to its lead with Mendoza registering a huge save, as she palmed the ball away, to hold the lead for the remainder of the match.
Recinos led the Minutewomen with two shots, including the lone shot on target. Pedolzky, Pinkus and senior Juliana Ryan followed behind with one shot apiece. The Scarlet Knights outshot the Minutewomen, 15-5, and had 10 corners to UMass' three.
Mendoza notched her first shutout of the season, and 12th of her career, competing in net for 90 minutes. She saved a season-best four shots on the afternoon. Rutgers Olivia Bodmer played the full 90 minutes and allowed one goal with no saves.
Massachusetts continues its homestand with a match against Harvard on Thursday, August 29, at 2 p.m.
