Women’s Soccer Kicks Off 2024 Season At Syracuse

The Minutewomen set for a road match against the Orange on Thursday.
AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts women's soccer opens its 2024 regular season with a road match on Thursday, August 15, against Syracuse at 7 p.m.
The 2024 season marks the 47th season for the program, with UMass holding an overall record of 504-285-75 (.583), and the seventh season under the leadership of head coach Jason Dowiak.
The Squad
Massachusetts returns 20 players from last season's team, including Atlantic 10 Midfield of the Year and All-Conference first team selection Bella Recinos. Graduate students Ella Curry, Karina Groff, Bella Mendoza, Hannah Peric and Grace Pinkus also rejoin the Minutewomen for the 2024 season.
Additionally, UMass welcomes nine newcomers for the 2024 campaign. The group features sophomore Calista Vlahos from Massachusetts, and freshmen Morgan Bellamy, Amelia Bloom, Libby Fisher, Sophia Foley, Annie McCaffrey, Leah Nisenfeld, Julia Rosenberg and Amanda Schultz.
The 2023 Season
UMass finished last season with a 9-5-4 overall record and a 6-6-2 mark in conference play. Massachusetts shutout nine opponents, including six at Rudd Field. In the A-10 Championships, the fourth-seeded Minutewomen fell to the No. 5-seed Duquesne in a close 2-1 A-10 Quarterfinals match.
Atlantic 10 Preseason Accolades
Massachusetts saw two Minutewomen in Peric and Recinos, earn a spot on the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team. Peric was one of four defenders, while Recinos was one of three midfielders selected for the honor. Additionally, UMass was picked to finish fourth in the A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league on Wednesday.
Scouting Syracuse
The Orange hold a 3-1-1 advantage over the Minutewomen in the all-time series. The two programs first met at a neutral site in Agawam, Massachusetts, on September 4, 1999, as the two teams went to double overtime, drawing a 2-2 tie. UMass and Syracuse met last season, as the Minutewomen picked up their first win in program history over the Orange with a 2-0 shutout victory.
Syracuse posted a 2-14-2 record in 2023 and were selected to finish 17th in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women's Soccer Coaches Poll with 22 points.
Looking Ahead
Following Thursday's season opener on the road, UMass will head to West Point, New York, to take on Army on Thursday, August 22 at 3 p.m. The Minutewomen will return to Amherst for two straight contests, hosting Rutgers for its home opener at 1 p.m. at Rudd Field on Sunday, August 25, and welcome Harvard to Amherst on Thursday, August 29, for a 2 p.m. matchup.
