Baseball Drops Series Opener To George Washington, 17-8

Skagerlind and Hanson registered a home run each, while Burgess recorded two doubles on the day.
UMass moved to 22-24 on the year, including 11-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Washington improved to 27-22 overall and 10-9 in the league.
Austin Burgess, Matt Travisano and Carter Hanson led the team with two hits apiece, as Burgess registered two doubles and Hanson had one double and his eighth home run of the season. Braden Sullivan also had a double on the day for his lone hit. Hanson also held a team-best here RBI and scored two runs of his own. Kevin Skagerlind recorded his third homer of the year and contributed two runs on the day. Travisano drove in two runs, as well, on the afternoon.
The Minutemen struck first to make it a 1-0 game early in the top of the first. Skagerlind led off with a walk, followed by Mike Gervasi reaching first on a walk with one out. Skagerlind, then, tagged up at second before advancing to third on a fly out. Travisano hit a single down the right field line, driving home Skagerlind.
An RBI double for George Washington tied up the game in the bottom of the first at one apiece, but a two-run single helped the Revolutionaries to a 3-1 lead.
Skagerlind brought UMass back within one at 3-2 with a solo home run, marking his third of the season and second in consecutive games, in the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, the Revolutionaries pushed across four runs to extend their lead, 7-2.
After one out, Hanson blasted the ball over the right field wall to get a run back in the top of the fourth to bring the game to a score of 7-3. Massachusetts scored three more runs in the top of the sixth to close the gap to one at 7-6. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Hanson and Sullivan aided the contest to a 7-5 score, before Michael Toth singled up the middle to push Sullivan across the plate.
A three-run homer for George Washington extended its lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Minutemen took back two runs in the top of the seventh to make it a 10-8 game. With one out, Burgess reached first on fielding error, before Gervasi hit a single to put Burgess in scoring position. Jack Beverly walked to take his place at first and advancing Gervasi to second to load up the bases. Travisano singled to right center field to score Burgess to make it 10-7. A fielder's choice allowed Gervasi to touch home plate and bring UMass within two.
George Washington tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the seventh before adding three in the eighth frame to pull ahead and bring the game to its final score of 17-8.
Renn Lints (3-1) had the loss for UMass, tossing five complete innings with eight runs on 13 hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Teddy Brennan (2-4) received the win for George Washington, allowing six runs, with three earned, seven hits, three walks and dealing four strikeouts in six innings pitched. Brandon Siegnthaler picked up his sixth save of the season went three innings, giving up only two runs with none earned, on three hits, a walk and striking out three.
Massachusetts and George Washington face off for game two of the series on Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
