Baseball Falls To George Washington, 3-2

Skagerlind records 34th career hit-by-pitch to surpass Peter Copa for the all-time program record.

ARLINGTON, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to George Washington University in a close 3-2 contest on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field. Senior Kevin Skagerlind recorded his 34th career hit-by-pitch to start off the eighth inning to surpass Peter Copa (2008-11; 33) for the all-time program record.  
 
UMass moved to 22-25 on the year, including 11-9 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Washington improved to 28-22 overall and 11-9 in the league.
 
Austin Burgess went 2-for-3 on the day with a team-high two runs and an RBI. He also clubbed his sixth home run of the season. Matt Travisano, Mike Gervasi and Michael Toth contributed a hit on the afternoon, as Travisano registered a double and posted an RBI.
 
Massachusetts scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third. With two outs, Burgess reached first on a walk, before Travisano doubled down the right field line, driving home Burgess.
 
An RBI double for George Washington tied up the game in the fourth at one apiece. The Revolutionaries took the lead in the fifth inning with a solo homer, making it a 2-1 contest.
 
In the sixth, Burgess led off with solo homer over the left field wall to knot it up, 2-2. It marked his sixth home run of the season. The eighth saw an RBI single for George Washington to break the tie and reclaim the lead at 3-2 and earn the win.
 
Zack Given (1-1) had the loss for the Minutemen, pitching one inning with one run allowed on two hits. Benny Wilson (1-1) earned the win for the Revolutionaries, giving up one hit, a walk and striking out one in two innings of work.
 
Massachusetts and George Washington conclude the series on Sunday, May 12, at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
