Setting the Scene
University of Massachusetts baseball continues its homestand with a non-conference midweek matchup against Quinnipiac University on Wednesday, May 1, at Earl Lorden Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Minutemen improved to 18-22 overall on the year after going 4-1 last week. The Bobcats currently sit at 16-23 overall with a 5-18 road record.
Recap in a Minute
UMass went 4-1 on the week last week, securing four straight victories over Siena (15-4) and a weekend sweep of Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's. The Minutemen won game one, 8-5, before defeating the Hawks 7-6 in game two and 10-9 in game three.
Carter Hanson led Massachusetts to its game one triumph after going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run while driving in a career-high five runs and scoring two. Kevin Skagerlind, Nolan Tichy and Zack Zaetta followed Hanson with one hit each. Mike Gervasi scored two runs of his own alongside Hanson, while Skagerlind, Tichy and Zaetta had one RBI apiece. Leif Bigelow picked up the win for UMass after relieving Renn Lints, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing only one run on one hit, while striking out two.
In game two, a walk-off sacrifice fly from Hanson to score Skagerlind in the ninth aided the team to its win, marking the 100th career win at UMass for head coach Matt Reynolds. Skagerlind and Austin Burgess led the team with two hits apiece, both registering a double on the day, while Skagerlind had a team-high two runs. Five Minutemen tallied one hit each, as Marc Willi and Michael Toth clubbed their fourth and second home run of the year, respectively, and Braden Sullivan hitting a double. Willi, Toth and Hanson all recorded two RBI, followed by Matt Travisano with one. Andrew Middleton earned his second win of the season allowing no hits, no runs, a walk and striking out two in 1.2 innings of work.
The series finale saw Gervasi club his 11th home run of the year in the ninth to lift UMass past SJU. Skagerlind went 3-for-4 on the day with his first home run of the season, a team-best three runs and one RBI. Gervasi, Hanson and Toth followed with two hits each, while Gervasi and Toth recorded their 11th and third homers of the year, respectively. Gervasi and Toth led the team in RBI with three apiece with Hanson adding two RBI. Burgess tallied two runs on the day. Bigelow earned his second winning decision of the series for Massachusetts after allowing one run on three hits and dealing two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work.
All-Time vs. Quinnipiac
The Minutemen lead the all-time series, 10-6, against the Bobcats, as the teams meet for the 17th time in program history on Wednesday afternoon. Massachusetts and Quinnipiac first met on March 21, 2000, as UMass came away with a 5-4 victory. The two teams met last season on May 3 with the Bobcats winning 10-7 on the day.
It's Going, Going, And It's Gone
Massachusetts has tallied 45 home runs in 40 games played from 11 Minutemen. Gervasi leads the team with 11, followed by Hanson and Jack Beverly with seven and six, respectively. Burgess has five on the season, while Willi has four on the year. Sullivan, Toth and Tichy all registered three on the season with Skagerlind, Kyle Hoog and Justin Blumenthal have all Had one on the season.
Gervasi registered his first long ball of the year in the first game of the season against Bucknell, before hitting his second and third in back-to-back games. He had his second homer in game three of the Bucknell series, before hitting his third in game one at No. 13 Virginia. Hanson had a home run as well in game one of the Bucknell series and tallied his second in the game two 10-5 win at No. 13 Virginia. Tichy recorded his lone homer in the final game against Bucknell.
Burgess had his first home run of the year in game two at Elon, while Beverly and Blumenthal hit their first in game three at Elon. Beverly's homer marked the first of his career. Sullivan recorded his first career grand slam, marking his first collegiate home run, at UMES. Willi registered his first career home run in the Beanpot Consolation against Harvard, before recording the second of his career in the next game at Fairfield.
Hoog and Toth both clubbed their first home runs of the year against Sacred Heart. Hoog's homer was his first as a Minuteman and second of his career, with Toth's being the second of his career. Skagerlind recorded his first long ball of the season in game three of the Saint Joseph's series, helping the Minutemen to complete the sweep.
On A Roll…
Thirteen Minutemen are riding a current hitting streak, so far this season. Hanson leads with four games, followed by Beverly and Skagerlind with three each. Burgess, Toth and Zaetta all are on a three-game streak, while seven players are on a one-game hitting streak, currently. Travisano held the team's longest streak of 13 games before it came to an end.
Burgess and Travisano lead the team with a 13 reached base streak, with Sullivan having a streak of 11 and Skagerlind having 10. Beverly has a reached bas streak of seven, while Hanson follows with four. Toth and Zaetta have reached base twice, while seven Minutemen have a reached base streak of one. Skagerlind held the longest streak for the Minutemen with a 25- reached base streak, before it came to an end.
[Multi]ple Games
In 40 games, UMass has a strong showing with multi-hit games, as the Minutemen have run their total of multi-hit performances to 98. Beverly and Travisano lead the production with 14 and 13, respectively, which included one four-hit game for Travisano. Skagerlind has 12 multi-hit games, while Burgess and Gervasi have 11 multi-hit games apiece, which includes three hits in five games for both players. Hanson follows with nine and Toth totaled seven, with one four-hit and three-hit performance for both Minutemen. Willi and Sullivan are on a five-game streak each, as Sullivan put together a four-hit performance in one contest. Four Minutemen totaled two multi-hit games with Jake Given having a three-hit performance, while Zaetta, Sam Hill and Peters are on a one-game streak, as Zaetta put together a three-hit game of his own.
Massachusetts also contributed a total of 61 multi-RBI games, led by Hanson with 12, including a five-RBI contest, marking the third Minuteman to accomplish five-plus RBIs in a game this season. Beverly follows behind with 10, while Gervasi has nine with two four RBI contests. Burgess totaled eight multi-RBI contests, which includes a five-plus RBI game, as he became the second Minutemen to have five or more RBI in a contest this year. Toth has five games, while Sullivan and Willi have had had four multi-RBI games each, with Sullivan recording the team's first five-plus RBI contest this season. Tichy and Travisano each have three, and Skagerlind, Zaetta and Given have one multi-RBI game, with Given and Skagerlind registering three RBI in one game each.
Career Wins
Reynolds collected his 100th career win on Saturday, April 27, in a 7-6 triumph over Saint Joseph's. Reynolds ranks fourth in the all-time coaching records with an overall record of 101-177-1, sitting behind Mike Stone (697-695-3; 1988-2017), Dick Bergquist (392-321-5; 1967-87) and Earl E. Lorden (189-147-3; 1948-66), respectively.
Keeping it in the Family
The 2024 season marks the 58th straight campaign that Massachusetts baseball will have an alumnus of the Flagship campus as head coach. Seventh-year skipper Matt Reynolds is a double graduate (2005, '10G), and was preceded by fellow alumni Mike Stone '82 (1988-2017) and Dick Bergquist '57 (1967-87).
This is the second longest active streak across Division I baseball. Only BYU (62 consecutive seasons) has been led by an alum of its campus for a longer period.
On Deck
Massachusetts returns to A-10 Conference play with a three-game series against St. Bonaventure on Friday, May 3, through Sunday, May 5. Friday's game is slated for 3 p.m., before Saturday's 1 p.m. contest. Sunday is set for a 12 p.m. first pitch. Friday and Sunday's game will be streamed on ESPN+.
