UMass moved to 10-27 overall, while Quinnipiac improved to 18-23 on the season.
Michael Toth led the Minutemen with a career-best three hits, including the first home run of his collegiate career. Toth also added a career high two runs and matched his career-best of two RBI to his stat sheet. Nolan Tichy followed with two hits, as three Minutemen registered one apiece. Kevin Skagerlind recorded two RBI, while Sam Hill contributed two runs to UMass' total.
Quinnipiac jumped ahead early, 1-0, on a solo home run in the first frame. UMass claimed the lead in the second, scoring two runs. Justin Blumenthal started off the inning taking first on a hit-by-pitch before Hill followed getting walked. Ryan Coleman loaded up the bases on his one-out single. Jack Peters was hit by a pitch, pushing Blumenthal across the plate to bring the game to a 1-1 draw. Skagerlind then was walked with the bases still loaded, scoring Hill to make it a 2-1 contest.
The Bobcats knotted up the game again in the third at two apiece with a RBI single, but the Minutemen pulled reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth. Peters reached first on a fielder's choice, before Skagerlind walked. Will MacLean hit a single to right center field, knocking in Peters to make it a 3-2 contest. Tichy drove in Skagerlind with a single of his own the left center field to extend Massachusetts' lead to 4-2. Quinnipiac got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, but a fielder's choice from MacLean to Toth saved the game-tying run and kept the score, 4-3, as UMass got out of a bases loaded jam to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Hill took his place at first on a walk. Toth stepped up to the plate, cranking a two-run long ball, the first of his collegiate career, over the left field fence, pushing UMass ahead 6-3. Quinnipiac scored on a RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth, tacked on another run with a solo homer at the end of the sixth and tallied a run in the seventh on another RBI single to even the score at 6-6.
The top of the eighth saw a leadoff single from Toth, before Coleman walked. A ground out sacrifice bunt by Peters advanced Toth and Coleman into scoring position at third and second, respectively. Skagerlind hit a sacrifice fly, as Toth tagged up and went home to give the Minutemen a 7-6 lead.
A four-run bottom half of the eighth frame for Quinnipiac secured a 10-7 win for the Bobcats, as UMass was unable to get the bats going for a rally in the ninth.
Charlie Devin (0-1) had the loss for UMass, giving up four runs, one hit and a walk, facing only four total batters in the eighth inning. Matt Alduino (2-0) recorded the win for Quinnipiac, throwing two complete innings and allowing one run on as many hits and a walk. Sam Favieri earned the save, going one complete inning, giving up one hit and striking out.
Massachusetts hosts Rhode Island for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series on Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7. Friday's game begins at 3 p.m., before a start time of 1 p.m. on Saturday. The series will conclude at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
