Baseball Falls To George Mason, 9-1, In Series Finale

The Minutemen prepare for two midweek games, starting Tuesday at UConn at 6 p.m.
FAIRFAX, Va. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell to George Mason University, 9-1, in the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
UMass moved to 14-21 overall, including 5-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while George Mason improved to 17-20 on the year and 5-7 in the league.
Mike Gervasi and Jack Peters recorded the teams two hits on the day, with Gervasi registering a double. Gervasi plated the lone run for the Minutemen, while Michael Toth collected an RBI.
George Mason struck early with an RBI single in the opening frame. The Patriots plated another run on a double in the second inning, before recording a four-run third to extend their lead to 6-0. George Mason added to its lead at 7-0 in the fourth, tacking on one run.
Massachusetts got on the board in the seventh frame, as Gervasi led off with a double down the left field line. Carter Hanson grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Gervasi to advance to third, before another ground out by Toth helped Gervasi across the dish to make it a 7-1 game.
The Patriots continued to pull ahead in the eighth inning, scoring two unearned runs. George Mason retired the side in the final frame to maintain its lead and win 9-1.
Robbie O'Connor (1-5) had the loss for UMass, giving up seven runs on six hits and striking out four in four innings of work. Ryan Peterson (2-1) secured the win after pitching a complete game, allowing only one run on two hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
Massachusetts continues on the road with two midweek games. The Minutemen travel to Storrs, Connecticut, on Tuesday, April 23, to face UConn at 6 p.m. on UConn+, before heading to Loudonville, New York, to take on Siena on Wednesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. on Siena All-Access.
